Israeli Army Commander Promises To Impede Lebanese, Iranian vessels
Israel’s army head pledged Tuesday to stop Lebanese and Iranian aid vessels from ingoing the Gaza Strip, adding the coastal farm would not turn into an Iranian harbor, media accounted.
“We have the right to inspect and prevent the flow of arms into Gaza,” the Ynet news website quoted Israeli chief of staff Gabi Ashkenazi as telling.
“We can’t let Gaza become an Iranian port,” he informed while speaking at a Jewish seminary in northern Israel.
Previously Tuesday Iranian Red Crescent administrators held an Iranian aid vessel is to depart the Gulf harbor of Bandar Abbas for a 14-day journey to Gaza at the end of this week, the ISNA news agency accounted.
Lebanese civilian groups are also setting up to launch two ships to the Israeli-blockaded Palestinian region via Cyprus.
“If a flotilla comes from Lebanon we will deal with it. If they are peaceful we will deal with it peacefully, if not we will deal with it as we need to,” Ashkenazi said.
The designed Iranian and Lebanese aid consignments come after a May 31 Israeli commando attack on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla that left nine Turkish pro-Palestinian campaigners deceased and ignited international indignation.
Israel has relieved the barrier on Gaza in the wake of the event.
Israel has quarreled the closures forced when one of its soldiers was detained by Gaza militants in a lethal June 2006 attack and tightened a year afterward when Hamas took over — are wanted to hold the Islamist pressure group.
